Has Western OT gOT spirit?
You be the judge…
Western is determined to promote occupational therapy around the community. We broadcasted
an interview on a local radiostation about what OT is, and its the role in people’s lives. We participated in
a local mall-walking program to create awareness about the benefits of OT. We placed several copies
of 'OT and Me' (a children’s book written by a Western OT graduate) in local libraries. We even created a
Western OT Twitter page, which was joined by the American Occupational Therapy Association, and
The British Association and College of Occupational Therapy. Now Western OT events can be
followed globally! (http://twitter.com/OTuwo)
Around Campus, OT has shown its spirit by publishing an article about OT in the Western newspaper.
We developed a list of the top 10 reasons to study OT at Western, and a MSc OT booklet, which
were both distributed to undergraduate faculties. An interdisciplinary lunch was organized by
occupational therapy,t o include physiotherapy, audiology, and speech language pathology to foster a
spirit of interprofessionalism and to provide education about one another’s scope of practice.
But enough about we’ve done to promote spirit around campus and the community.
What exactly is all this spirit promoting??This was a question on everyone’s minds when entering this competition. All Western OT
faculty members and students were asked to submit, in a few words, their idea of what OT Spirit means to them.
10 of these submissions were chosen to accompany our 10 photos.

Heart, Drive and Determination brought Sarah Bonikowsky to the 2008 Olympics to earn 4th place
in women's rowing. Now she calls Western home, and here she sports purple and white with pride on
the lake, wearing her custom hand orthosis.
Energy definitely wasn’t in short supply when we held a car wash to raise funds for our local
Assertive Community Treatment team, despite the rain!
Energy, Courage, and OT Pride were in full effect every week when the OT "CMOP-Es" went
undefeated on the field, in the Western ultimate Frisbee intramural league.
They say a picture says a thousand words and Western's pictures said a mouth full. But what was
said exemplified the true “spirit” of OT. OT is conducted in the “spirit” of collaboration
with peers, colleagues, clients, families and communities. OT is creative and resourceful,
uses a holistic approach to look at a person, occupation and the environment. OTs enable
individuals to achieve their potential in all aspects of life, whether that be self-care, productivity or leisure.
So, does Western OT gOT spirit?!
We think you’ve got your answer.
